Y.M.C.A. Excursion to Monadnock

  • History

New Hampshire Sentinel, August 27, 1890 - The excursion to Monadnock on Monday was a success.  Thirty-six tickets were sold, four of whom went on the early train.  The rest took the 10:20 train and were met at Troy by Mr. Goodrich with two large excursion wagons and two carriages, which took the party safely to the Mountain House in time for a very enjoyable dinner served in picnic style in the woods back of the hotel.  After the excursionists had supplied the wants of the inner man they became “exertionists” as one said, and started up the rocky walk up the mountainside.  Those who had pluck and strength enough to reach the summit were well paid by the grand view.  Those who went for the first time were delighted beyond expectation and felt that truly “the half had not been told” of the grandeur of the extensive expanse of scenery.  Most of the party returned on the early train while about a dozen remained to see the sun set on the mountain and came down by moonlight in time for the train reaching Keene at 10:05.
